Pupils learn how to be safe

Ralph Dorward of Tayside Contracts explains the dangers of roadworks to pupils from Downfield Primary School.

Pupils from schools across Dundee have been learning how to be safe during a series of special scenarios set up by the emergency services and public bodies.
The simulations form part of the annual Safetaysiders’ event and take place at the Tayside Police training centre at Balunefield.

Tayside Police Chief Constable John Vine today joined some of the children taking part.

The events have been set up by members of Tayside Police, Tayside Fire Brigade, Scottish Ambulance Service, Countryside Rangers, The Peer Education Project, Transco, Environmental and Consumer Protection and Tayside Contracts.

Each scenario is designed to test the reactions of children and to educate them as to what they should do when faced with a number of different situations.

The children are faced with challenges over the course of the day and learn how to enter a building site and to use the Internet safely.

Safetaysiders has been running in Dundee for over 10 years and during that time has taught thousands of children from across the city how to handle themselves in potentially dangerous situations.

To ensure that this event continues, Radio Tay’s Caring for Kids donated £500 towards the running of the event this year.

The scheme has been running since Monday and will finish on Friday.
