| They say that the section between Eastern Primary School and just beyond Panmure Street is a dangerous stretch where drivers continually flout the speed restrictions.
One resident called for the limit to be reduced and said the problem is related to the 40mph limit being just a short distance away.
“Cars come racing down the street all the time and it’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt,” said the resident.
“My kids walk down the street to get to school and if an accident happens around 9am near the school we could be looking at a fatality.
“The cars are coming out of a 40mph zone and into a 30mph and continue as if still in the 40mph area, so it should be made 30mph all the way.
“Having stood out front for a period of time, I have seen what it is like. They zoom down from the lights and treat it like a race track. It is unbelievable and all manner of drivers speed there — young and old, men and women, and some even with kids in the car.
“People have been complaining for months and it is about time something was done about it.”
A policy was agreed by the city council planning and transportation committee earlier in the week to phase in 20mph restriction zones around the city’s schools over the next two years.
The introduction will proceed after consultation with the director of education to determine priorities.
Councillor for Broughty Ferry, Charles Webster, who attended the meeting, said, “On Monday night a policy was agreed to implement zones around schools over the next two years that will be subject to speed restrictions and I welcome this completely.”
The councillor was made aware of the problem on Monifieth Road by residents and said he abhors the speeding, especially so close to the school.
“We cannot tolerate speeding, and especially in built-up areas, and I hope that this policy helps to combat the problem.
“Motorists in general should respect speed limits on our roads and particularly around schools and places where the elderly and frail are likely to be walking.”
He continued, “People have come to me about speeding in other parts of Broughty Ferry and my first words to them are to go to the police in the first instance.
“I am aware that there are incidents of speeding in Broughty Ferry and I deplore that this happens.
“When matters of public safety are involved, I encourage motorists to abide by the limits put in place to ensure that the well-being of the public is maintained.” |
