| Tom Ramsay (59), who was born in Dundee, is trying to raise £2500 to take part in a six-day hike in Vietnam in aid of Maggie’s Centre, a charity close to his heart.
Tom said, “I lost my brother and sister to cancer and so many other friends I’ve known have been affected by the disease. My brother and sister were 56 when they died.
“The hike will be touched with sadness.”
Tom is looking forward to conquering Mount Fansipan and experiencing rich rainforests and unspoilt palm-lined beaches
“I’ve always wanted to do something for charity,” added Tom.
“When the offer of going to Vietnam came through the post I thought it was a good idea.
“I’m 59 and I’m very fit.
“I served for 22 years in the Royal Marines and retired in 1994. I have been to Iraq, Northern Ireland, Cyprus. I haven’t been to Vietnam before.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge. The biggest challenge is raising the necessary funds.”
Tom has to raise £2500 by December 6 to take part in the 10-day trip with six days hiking beginning on March 6.
It costs £1.2-1.5 million to build each Maggie’s Centre and a further £225,000 to run them annually.
Tom now works as principal chauffeur at St Andrews University.
Maggie’s Dundee — the UK’s first building designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry — was recently named building of the year by the Royal Fine Art Commission.
Now open five days a week, Maggie’s Dundee is fulfilling the purpose for which it was intended — helping people with cancer, their carers, family and friends, from across Dundee and Tayside learn how to manage the physical and emotional impact of living with cancer. |
