One way to save £millions
IT IS sad to think politics in Scotland has reached the stage where it has been dumbed down so much that personality takes precedence over policy.
Reader Political Watcher believes a change in leader could see the SNP become the major force in Scottish politics.

Bar a major catastrophe, Alex Salmond will emerge as the winner of the SNP leadership contest. Yet this only means the SNP will continue down the “gradualist” road to independence which toppled John Swinney.

The dream ticket of Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon propose a wide-ranging manifesto. One such pledge is “democracy days”.

Based along the lines of Channel 4’s Big Brother programme, Joe Public would phone in and decide what was to be discussed.

Why stop there? Let’s agree that Joe Public can not only select what is for debate but can debate the matter as well.

That way we can save millions on MSP salaries, not to mention the cost of the reams of A4 that would be needed for Alex Salmond’s outlandish ideas. — W. Wilson, Perth Road, Dundee.

Needing a good tidy

Weeds encroaching on the path/cycleway at Stannergate.

DUNDEE’S GRASSY Beach area, at Stannergate, is badly in need of tidying up.

Approaching from the steps at the Stannergate, the walkway is bad, but between the two walkway sections weeds are perhaps worse where the seats are almost lost in the undergrowth. — Wide-Eyed Walker.

Housing ballot wanted
THE SCOTTISH Executive has told councils, health boards and other service providers they have to consult with us, the public, as to what our priorities are regarding services they provide.

It’s not meant to be something they make up then tell us what we want.

Yet they continue to have the arrogance to create city and local community plans, printed on nice glossy paper at our expense.

Then we’re told we have these plans.

The authorities say they consulted the 16,000 council tenants in Dundee as to whether we wanted stock transfer or not.

Did you see it? Did you respond? Do you know what stock transfer is?

The council has decided to demolish another 3000 of our homes that we still have not paid for.

I want a ballot. One where I have been given all the information I need about what my options are, the same as they had in Glasgow and other areas of Scotland. — D. T., Dundee.

Lights
I AM happy to inform letter writer Dundee Driver that the traffic signal controller at the Hilltown/ Constitution Street junction was replaced with a modern unit, such as the one at Stobswell, on the day before his/her letter was published.

The previous equipment was installed in 1991 and utilised the technology of the time.

While the housing unit is still of old design, this modification to the site should make the junction far more responsive during the off-peak hours.

It is the intention of the council’s Urban Traffic Control section that all existing/future installations will operate in this manner as replacement kit becomes available. — Councillor Fiona Grant, Convener of Planning & Transportation, Dundee City Council.

Is it fair?
I WAS just wondering if someone in Dundee City Council would answer a question.

Or maybe taxi drivers and publicans should be asked if it is fair that George Regan keeps his post as a councillor following his conviction for drink-driving.

The council take a stern view on people with convictions. As they say, “unfit or proper person”.

Someone in Mr Regan’s position is supposed to be a fit, proper and upstanding person in the community. — Curious.

Cemetery thief
WILL THE thief who stole the ornaments from my husband's grave in Birkhill Cemetery put them back? If you don’t I hope they haunt you. — Mrs Margaret Falconer, Fleming Gardens West, Dundee.
