New sheriff installed

Dundee’s newest resident sheriff, Sheriff Tom Hughes, was today formerly installed at a ceremony conducted by Sheriff Principal Robert Dunlop QC.
Sheriff Hughes is the second of three new sheriffs to be installed in the city following the installation of Sheriff Duff three weeks ago.

Sheriff Principal Dunlop said Sheriff Hughes’ appointment is to fill the vacancy to be left by Sheriff Crowe, who is to take up appointment as Director of Judicial Studies. Since Sheriff Hughes could take up his duties before the vacancy arose, the court would for some weeks at least have the services of both sheriffs.

Sheriff Hughes was born and brought up in Neilston, Glasgow. He graduated LLB from the University of Strathclyde, serving his apprenticeship with the firm JB Murphy & Co, Glasgow, and was admitted as a solicitor in 1979.

In 1980 he joined McAuley McCarthy and Co in Barrhead, where he remained until leaving private practice this year.

In May 2003 he was appointed a part time sheriff.
