Strike holding firm in Tayside and Fife
The strike action which has crippled Jobcentre and benefit services in Tayside and Fife, was holding firm today, according to union officials.
Members of the country’s biggest civil service union, the PCS, are locked in a dispute with employers over pay and a controversial bonus scheme.

The Department of Work and Pensions reported this morning that service levels in Tayside and Fife were “identical” to the first day of the 48-hour walk-out.

That meant the closure of the social security office in Perth, while all the other DWP centres in Tayside — Dundee, Arbroath, Blairgowrie, Forfar and Montrose — were open for either limited or severely reduced services.

The Dundee Pension Centre facility at Claverhouse, Dundee, which has a question mark hanging over it in the light of proposed cuts to the civil service, has also been affected.

Tayside branch secretary of the PCS, Ali Arnott, said today, “There is the same massive support as there was yesterday. I believe that the offices are at the same state of service as they were yesterday.

“We are extremely happy with the level of support, which has actually increased since the last strike action. That is reflected across the country.”

The walk-out is the third this year, and has led to calls from politicians for a “quick and amicable settlement” to minimise the impact on service users.

There was also disruption to both Job Centre and social security offices throughout Fife, most of which were providing a limited service.
