Bill helps launch campaign to save water

Scottish Water customer service director Cheryl Black and Bill Torrance.

People in Dundee and Angus were today urged to reduce their water consumption as the Backwater/Lintrathen reservoirs have plunged to almost half their normal level, writes Bryan Kay.
Scottish Water, launching a new advertising campaign, called on the 294,000 people in Tayside supplied by the reservoirs to be more frugal with their supply.

Radio messages, fronted by former Beechgrove Garden host Bill Torrance, will be backed up by advertising emblazoned on the sides of buses, showing steps that can be taken to reduce consumption.

Since concerns were first raised in November, public appeals have led to a 15% reduction in demand compared to this time last year and Scottish Water is hoping the current campaign will extend that.

A drought order was put in place recently, which allowed Scottish Water to take water from the River Isla to augment the reservoirs. But that is only possible when the river is at high flow so Scottish Water have been forced to appeal to the public.

Services director Cheryl Black said the role of the public in restoring reservoirs to normal level is vital if more extreme measures are to be avoided. Measures customers can take to help include: fixing dripping taps;       using a watering can instead of a hose; using a bucket instead of a hose to wash cars;        taking a shower instead of a bath; turning off the tap when brushing teeth or shaving.
