| As well as having former Celtic goalkeeper Stewart Kerr and ex-Rangers central defender Chris McLeod on trial, John also has former Hibs midfield man Alan Reid showing his paces.
The youngster featured in the Hibs first team last season, but is available.
And, with Saints still looking to strengthen in the middle of the park, Reid has a chance to win himself a deal.
The Perth club are gearing up for Saturday’s opening Bell’s Cup tie against Hamilton at home and held a bounce game today.
Kevin Rutkiewicz, Lee Hardy and Paul Bernard are receiving treatment, but it’s hoped they’ll be fit for the Hamilton game, although a clearer picture won’t be known until nearer Saturday.
He’s just 21, but Ross Forsyth is a St Johnstone veteran. With six years’ service, the left- back is one of the longest-serving players on the Perth club’s books.
“It’s strange to think that, even though I’m 21, I’ve been here longer than most,” reflected Ross, who aims to make the left-back spot his own this season.
In the last two seasons, Ross has been in and out in that position, but, with Jamie McQuilken on a six-month loan with Gretna, it looks a straight fight between Ross and Eddie Malone for the No. 3 jersey.
“Kevin Cuthbert and Martyn Fotheringham are two of the other young lads at the club and the three of us are among the longest- serving. That just shows the amount of comings and goings there have been recently,” Ross continued.
“But I still enjoy it at McDiarmid Park. I like it here, I’ve signed on again for a year, and this could be the season when we regain our Premierleague spot.
“The new boys John Connolly has brought in are looking good and there could be two or three more in the door before too long.
“There’s competition for places and John has proved himself to be a great motivator.
“The season starts in earnest for us on Saturday at home to Hamilton Accies in the Bell’s Cup and I’m looking forward to that — and to the rest of the season.”
