24-hour help for abused women
Dundee women, who are victims of domestic abuse, will now be able to speak to trained advisors at any hour of the day or night, writes Katherine Trail.
The freephone Domestic Abuse Helpline is to operate a 24-hour service all year round, starting from today, after receiving extra funding from the Scottish Executive.

During a trial period between December and May, on average 15 women called each night between the hours of midnight and 10 am, when the service was normally closed.

Calls ranged from women who were still experiencing the effects of abuse even though they were no longer living with the abuser, to crisis calls where physical violence was happening.

A spokesperson for the Dundee branch of Women’s Aid said, “Domestic abuse isn’t just a nine-to-five problem. Sometimes women call late at night when their husbands or partners are out or when it’s easier to make a phone call in private.

“We don’t get a huge number of women calling after 10 pm, but if this helpline gives assistance to even one or two women, it’s been a success.

“One of the most important things about it is that it’s a freephone number, so it won’t appear on an itemised phone bill either.”

Deputy Communities Minister Mary Mulligan said, “We’re creating a permanent, 24-hour service because this Helpline provides invaluable support to women when they are very distressed and afraid.

“Anyone can call and speak confidentially to a trained adviser at any time of the day or night. Support services are in place for anyone suffering abuse.

“The message is clear — you’re not alone, and help is now available 24 hours a day. Abuse should not be tolerated — it is an abuse of power, and it is nobody’s fault but the perpetrator’s.”

Liz Kelly from the Scottish Domestic Abuse Helpline said, “Domestic abuse happens in every walk of life. It’s really important callers don’t just get an answering machine, so we’re delighted the Executive has decided to permanently extend this vital service.”

The Domestic Abuse Helpline number is 0800 027 1234.
