Textiles history woven into net

A project allowing wider access to Scotland’s rich and diverse textile heritage was launched in Dundee today.
The Scottish Textile Heritage Online website brings together information and images on the history and developments of Scotland’s textile industry held in archives and museums across Scotland and beyond.

A pilot of the project has been running for a year, and its success has led to the launch of the permanent website.

The website, www.scottishtextiles.org.uk, carries information on embroidery, textile art works, textile machinery, tweeds and tartans, haute couture garments, trade union banners and records and industry business records. Many of these collections are relatively unknown, but can provide a wealth of information for historians, textile designers, researchers and the public.

The website contains a database of more than 3000 records, including textile-related museum and archive collections and objects, as well as more than 400 images.

An online resources section contains essays on textile-related subjects and maps showing the distribution of collections across Scotland.

Heriot-Watt University the University of Dundee, Glasgow School of Art, University of Glasgow, Paisley Museum and Art Galleries and the Scottish Borders Council worked together with more than 100 archives and museums to create the website.

The project has been funded by Scottish Museums Council Strategic Change Award. Project manager Ann Jones, of Heriot Watt University, said, “This is an exciting development for textile heritage in Scotland.”
