Hoping frown will slow down Dundee drivers

Brackens pupils and PC Craig Tosh monitor traffic speed.

Drivers speeding outside a Dundee primary were being frowned upon today.
Police set up a new speed camera outside Brackens Primary, in Laird Street, that flashed up a frowning face on its electronic display whenever a driver exceeded the speed limit.

Drivers who stuck within the law were greeted with a smiling face as the force resorted to psychology in an attempt to win the war against speeding outside the school.

Downfield liaison officer PC Craig Tosh said the electronic display was portable and would be used to target areas where there was a recognised speeding problem.

He said, “The Scottish Executive has set a target to halve the number of children killed and seriously injured by 2010.

“In Dundee alone there were 1947 road traffic accidents from April 2002 until March 2003. These resulted in 367 injuries, 82 involving children. From April 2003 to the present time there have been 1394 road traffic accidents with 250 people injured, 56 involving children.

“Although we have a significant reduction in the number of people, especially children, injured on our roads, every accident affects many members of the community. We cannot afford to be complacent.”

Brackens councillor Ian Borthwick said, “The problems in Laird Street continue to cause considerable concern to constituents. I welcome any strengthening of enforcement in the area.”
