MILLER: McCALL IS HOPEFUL
Dundee United boss Ian McCall believes out-of-contract midfielder Charlie Miller will either be playing his football in Spain or Scotland next season (writes Tom Duthie).
Despite working to a tight budget, Ian is making a determined effort to persuade a man he regards as the best natural Scottish midfield talent around, that signing a new deal with the Tangerines remains his best option.

And, without wishing to build up fans hopes too much, Ian is gradually growing more optimistic that he might succeed.

“If a couple of weeks or so ago I thought there was only a 5% chance he would stay, now I’d put it at around 20% and that’s at least movement in the right direction,” said Ian today.

“What I don’t want, though, is for people to get carried away and there is still a very good chance he will be moving on. If he does, I think it will be to Spain. I know he has options down in England, but my feeling is he will be staying here or going abroad.”

If Miller decides to go, his most likely destination is Valencia and promotion hopefuls Levante. They are top of the Second Division and on course for a place in the Spanish top flight next term.

Rotherham have also been strongly linked with Miller, but likely changes in ownership and management there have put that move in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, as well as trying to hang on to one of his star men, the United gaffer is still working hard to add to his squad for next term and his search for new talent has taken him far afield.

With goalkeeper Paul Gallacher lined up to sign for Norwich City this week, Ian will be making moves to get another keeper over the next few weeks.

“I’ve already said Tony Bullock will get the chance to make the position his at the start of the season, and I know of a few keepers in Australia who would be worth having a look at. I’m playing it by ear right now, but I might bring a couple across.”

As he also attempts to strengthen at the other end of the pitch, Ian has now held initial talks with Partick Thistle striker James Grady, though he admits competition for the former Dundee man is stiff.

Grady’s old employers at Dens, Hearts and even Aberdeen have all been linked, but United are fighting hard to get him.

“He’s is a good player who has just had a very good season, so there was bound to be a lot of interest in him. I have spoken to him and that one is ongoing,” added Ian.
