‘Year out’ to be permanent

A Perth woman, who left Scotland 18 months ago for a “year out” in South Africa and Australia, is to make South Africa her permanent home, writes Michael Alexander.
Perth Theatre’s former assistant catering manager Rhoda Gordon (29) is to co-run a new overland safari tour company with her Cape Town-born fiance Grant Negus.

After eight years working at Perth Theatre, Rhoda headed off in November 2002 in search of a “little bit of sun and fun”.

No stranger to adventure, having taken part in a 200km charity canoe trip through the Central American jungles of Belize in 2001, she made her way to Cape Town where she intended to stay for two months.

Falling in love with the African bush — and with Grant — while working for an overland tour company, she ended up staying put and travelled through eight African countries in 14 months.

After a brief return to Scotland, Rhoda has decided to make a permanent move to South Africa with Grant and continue her involvement in African overlanding.

Grant has been involved in the industry for over five years.

She explained that his love for Africa has given birth to Beyond Reach Africa — an independent tour company which will offer safaris for all intrepid travellers while specialising in trips for the deaf.

From South Africa, Rhoda told the Evening Telegraph, “The most important factor of being out here is the ability to make a real difference to the people and places I visit, whether it is pointing out to newcomers the traditions of the Himba or the plight of the Wild Dog, or creating awareness about corruption in certain governments and the effect on the citizens.”

During her tours, Rhoda has already travelled all over South Africa as well as to many other places.

The new Beyond Reach tour company will encompass similar tours exploring mountains, deserts, wildlife and cultures.

Rhoda added, “To start off with we will only be doing organised tours as far as Zambia. By this I mean with set itinaries. This doesn’t however limit the touring experience.

“If for example you want to see certain areas we can customise the tour to suit those needs. “I think the important point is that the group will be able to travel together.

“We can offer interpreters where required, however with not everyone using ISL (International Sign Language) it is safe to assume that the need for someone from the community or organisation is necessary.

“Our tours will be all-inclusive camping safaris, with the option of upgrade. This does not include our Cape Town and surroundings tour which will be hostel accommodation.”

The company website at www.beyondreachafrica.co.za is under construction and will feature detailed itineraries and departure dates. Further information will be available by emailing info@beyondreachafrica.co.za
