| The Derek Sword trophy, a silver rose bowl donated by friends and colleagues at investment bankers Keefe Bruyette and Woods, is played for between squash teams from New York and London.
At the request of his family, this year the match will take place in his home country, at the Edinburgh Sports Club.
The New York team taking part tomorrow will also feature friends of Derek from Dundee, which spokesman Alan Thatcher described as a “nice touch.”
He continued, “This is the third year we have held it. The first was in London the second in New York, and it was there Derek’s fiancee Maureen Sullivan asked if the match could take place in Scotland this year.”
Derek (29) was in the same Scottish junior international squad as top stars Peter Nicol and Martin Heath, and later became club champion at New York Athletic Club.
He was on the 89th floor of the south tower when the terrorists struck.
He had only got engaged to Maureen two weeks before the attack, and his fiancee will be at the competition tomorrow as in previous years.
Derek’s parents Irene and David will also be in attendance, and his brothers Allan and Graeme are both taking part.
Mr Thatcher went on, “We were discussing this morning whether it becomes less emotional three years on, but the answer is no.” |
