| Police said they had launched a full-scale murder inquiry.
It is understood the incident happened during the night, but the body was found just after 7am.
The mobile incident caravan was rushed to the scene and forensic scientists clad in protective whites began a minute search of the entrance area at 20 Ballantrae Terrace.
The body was still in the close several hours later.
Stunned locals watched from windows and balconies as police started door-to-door inquiries.
One female resident said it frightened her to think of such an event happening so close to her home.
The street and tenement have been closed off by Tayside Police in order that a full and proper forensic search can be carried out.
Detective Chief Inspector Jim Cameron is the Senior Investigating Officer.
DCI Cameron said, “We would like anyone who was in the area between midnight and 7.30am this morning to get in touch with us.
“It’s possible that they may have seen or heard something.
“We have information that suggests there was a disturbance in the area at around 1am and we would be interested to hear from anyone who may have seen the individuals involved.”
“Officers are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage in the hope that whoever is responsible for this murder may have been captured on tape.”
The Tayside Police incident caravan is now at Ballantrae Gardens and officers are carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area.
Anyone who has information which may assist the inquiry team should get in touch with Tayside Police on Dundee 223200 immediately.
