| Dundee City Council today denied there was a problem with employees smoking on the job.
A council spokesperson claimed they had received no complaints and no employee had been disciplined for smoking.
The council comments follow a letter by an employee — who withheld his name — of the parks and leisure department. He claimed the council’s smoking policy was a “sham”.
The letter stated, “The smoking that goes on in the department is scandalous. Parks and leisure staff smoke in the vans, the golf starting huts, the bothies and the sports centres.
“They smoke in all the main staff areas in Riverside Park, Camperdown Park, Caird Park and all the main parks in town.
“The council has a non-smoking policy but in our department it’s a sham.
“Some of us are ex-smokers and are appalled by the amount of passive smoking we have to put up with.
“We assure the council if the parks and leisure department do not stamp out passive smoking, we will sue the city council.”
A spokesperson for Dundee City Council replied, “We rigorously adhere to the council’s no smoking policy and this includes leisure centres, bothies, starting huts and council vehicles.
“If anyone has any concerns they should inform their line manager or the director so the problem can be dealt with as soon as possible.” |
