“International Women’s Day highlights the need for equal pay, as well as many other issues surrounding women. It is a chance for women to come together and discuss matters, as well as having fun.”
A man from Cambodia, and Lesley Mount from Signpost International also spoke, highlighting the importance of the Day.
International Women’s Day is an occasion marked by women’s groups around the world. It is also recognised by the United Nations, and is designated in many countries as a national holiday.
The idea of an International Women’s Day first rose at the turn of the last century, in a period of booming population growth and radical ideologies. The day marks the struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men.
Over the years, some of the issues International Women’s Day have focused on include domestic violence, rape and childcare. |
