CHANCE TO SHINE
He’s tempted to go with an unchanged line-up when the top team return to action at Partick this weekend, but Dundee United boss Ian McCall still wants to see fringe players stake strong claims for places when they see U/21 action tonight (writes Tom Duthie).
The second string play host to Livingston at Tannadice, and Ian admits that, after the SPL win over Rangers eight days ago, it will take exceptional performances in that one for any of tonight’s line-up to force their way into his thoughts for a starting berth at Firhill.

However, the likes of Craig Easton, Stuart Duff, Collin Samuel and Jason Scotland will be handed the chance to do that and the gaffer expects to see positive performances.

“Craig Easton, in particular, has been doing well for the U/21s, and he was very close to being included from the start against Rangers,” said Ian.

“Of course, after the result we got in that game, it is not going to be easy for anyone to force a way into the plans for the Thistle game. But this is still a chance for them and I expect them to try their best.”

Missing out again tonight will be Scott Paterson. He trained with the physio all last week after a setback in his battle to regain full fitness.

While he’s recovered from an unrelated problem, he won’t be put into the U/21s until he’s had at least a few days training with the rest of the squad. Also not fit enough to be included are Tony Bullock and Jim Paterson.

Today, Ian opened talks with Charlie Miller over a new contract. “We’ve made it clear that if Charlie keeps going about his business the way he has been, we want to keep him here,” added Ian. Also in talks about extending their stays are Alan Archibald, Jim McIntyre, Paul Gallacher and Graeme Holmes.
