DUNDEE, UNITED TRY IDEAS
With both city clubs idle this weekend due to early exits from the Tennent’s Scottish Cup, the managers have been trying out new ideas to keep their players on their toes (writes John Brown).
Former Dundee player and ex-Arsenal and England internationalist Graham Rix has been in charge of training at Dens Park this week — with the full blessing of team boss Jim Duffy.

Rix, who spent a season with the Dark Blues in the 1990s under Simon Stainrod, is brushing up on his coaching badge work.

And Duffy believes this move will bring a freshness to his squad.

“Graham is someone I trust and know well, and I think he can bring a fresh approach to our training,” said the manager.

“I think it is a good thing for the players to hear a different voice for a few days and, perhaps, be given a slight change to the routine.

“It suits me, too, although taking training is a job I love doing, I appreciate the chance to recharge my batteries.”

“Bonding”

At Tannadice, manager Ian McCall gave the players a couple of days off, and also took his staff out to lunch.

“Going out to lunch together was a bit of a bonding exercise,” said Ian.

“I think it worked well. However, we are back in full training for the trip to Partick Thistle a week tomorrow.

“Scott Paterson, Jim Paterson and Tony Bullock have all stepped up their training in the last few days — and that is very good news for us.

“Barry Robson picked up a knock and hasn’t trained this week so far, but we are not unduly concerned about that.

“I expect Barry to be available for Firhill.”

United’s U/19s were in action later today against Livingston at Glenesk Park.
