Bangers and cash on Dee4Life menu

Dundee butcher and Dark Blues fan Gilbert Grossett is doing his bit to help out the club by producing sausages in the team colours. He visited Dens Park today to tempt international defender Lee Wilkie with a plateful of his creations. Gilbert is selling the bangers at £3 a pound, with DFC getting £2 of that.

The busiest few days in the Dee4Life campaign so far has resulted in a £25,000 boost for the battle to save Dundee FC.
Two massive fund-raising events were held in the city last weekend, bringing the total raised to around £130,000 in just a few months.

Radio and TV personality Tam Cowan hosted a comedy night at the Caird Hall on Friday, while a sportsman’s dinner was held at the Invercarse Hotel on Sunday.

The former event was attended by a crowd of 1000 and, whilst the final figure has not been confirmed, it’s thought over £10,000 was raised.

Team boss Jim Duffy was MC at the latter event, which attracted over 250 paying guests.

A raffle and auction took place and a total of £14,620 was raised with the star item of the raffle, a Napoli shirt worn and signed by Argentinian superstar Diego Maradona fetching £1600.

Dundee Supporters Association chairman George Knight once more heaped praise on the fans who turned out in their droves to support the campaign.

“It is fantastic to see the number of people who attended these events and the money which has been raised,” he said.

“We are still counting the money, but it appears that in excess of £25,000 has been raised in our busiest few days so far. What makes this all the more special is that these events took place at the end of January, when cash is traditionally tight for a lot of people and our supporters had a lot of big games such as the derby and the semi-final to go to.

“Still these people managed to put their hands in their pockets and raise this total, which is what we have made once costs have been deducted.

“One supporter who was at the dinner was over visiting from South Africa, where he now lives, and he was absolutely delirious about the whole night and what is being done for the club.”

Dee4Life events are set to continue over the coming months, although, with such a large sum raised in such a short space of time, the committee are now set to focus on large-scale fund-raisers similar to the ones held over the weekend.

“The Smart Car will be up for raffle at the Wellgate Centre from Monday and, at just £2 a ticket, it’s a fantastic opportunity to win a car and help Dee4Life at the same time.

“Another night with Tam Cowan has been scheduled for Dundee Social Club on February 19, but it has sold out already.”
