| The world first was not in the field of science or medicine on this occasion but an ambitious musical project. Graeme Stevenson, the university’s music co-ordinator, and Paul Smith of Apex Productions, broke the world record for staging a musical in less than 24 hours.
They cast, rehearsed, and produced the performance of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in a record 23 hours 30 minutes.
After a race against the clock, they managed to outdo the previous world record of 23 hrs and 55 mins, held by Velvet Jacket Productions in Edinburgh.
At 8 pm on Friday, September 26, David Brand from the university’s law department chose the scripts and scores for the musical from six sent in a sealed box by The Guinness Book of Records.
They succeeded in completing their preparations, with the curtain rising at precisely 7.30 pm on Saturday, September 27.
The production was held in the Gardyne Theatre where the cast and band performed for an audience of over 200.
The musical society raised £910 for each of the two benefiting charities, Radio Tay’s Caring for Kids and the Institute for Cardiovascular Research (TICR).
Grant Reid and Euan Notman from Radio Tay and Robert McLaren of TICR visited the university today to receive cheques from Graeme and Paul. |
