| The Dundee branch of the Muslim Educational Council in Scotland (MECS), an offshoot of the Muslim Association of Britain, has announced the meeting will take place on February 18 at Dundee University.
In attendance will be Ibrahim Hewitt, a Muslim convert and the headteacher of Islamic school Al Aqsa Primary in Leicestershire. He will lead the discussion and programme of events, titled, The Role of Education in Islam.
MECS Dundee event co-ordinator Faizel Hussein said he has invited a host of individuals from across the city, including MPs, MSPs, church officials, Dundee City Council education director Anne Wilson and mosque officials.
Mr Hussein said, “The Muslim Educational Council was set up in response to a growing need among Scotland’s Muslim community for schools run with an Islamic ethos. This idea was encouraged greatly by East Renfrewshire Council’s comments on the possibility of having a state-funded school in its constituent area if the demand from the community was proven.
“MECS is currently undertaking extensive research into the feasibility of having Islamic schools in other areas of Glasgow and in other cities, including Dundee.
“MECS is made up of professionals and educationalists representing all areas of Scotland and is currently running a petition throughout Scotland to show support of state-funded Islamic schools, which will be presented to the Scottish Executive.
“The research shows there is strong parental support as well as support from First Minister Jack McConnell.”
Mr Hussein added, “This meeting should be a good opportunity to understand the wider scope of things in Dundee.”
A spokesperson for Dundee City Council said it had not yet received an invitation. |
