| Iain’s wife, Marie, was diagnosed with the disease in November 2002 after she noticed a lump during self-examination.
Having experienced the support and facilities provided, Iain and his family want to show their appreciation for the vital role the Maggie’s Centre plays in helping people affected by cancer.
He was at the Apex City Quay Hotel today launching a campaign to gain sponsorship for his marathon run in an effort to raise funds to go towards the ongoing costs needed to run the centre.
Iain and Marie have been provided with sponsorship forms, collecting cans, posters and Maggie’s Centre T-shirts, one of which the MP will wear on his run on April 18.
The first donation to the fund came from Marie, who put a £200 cheque in a special account with her branch of Clydesdale Bank, who are also lending their support to the Lukes’ fundraising efforts.
She described the ongoing support and facilities provided by the Maggie’s Centre as “incredible”.
Valerie Busher, fundraising co-ordinator of the Maggie’s Centre said, “It will cost £300,000 to run the centre this year as all the services are provided free of charge.
“We couldn’t do it without the support from Iain and people like him.” |
