MSP’s praise for Perth racecourse

Delighted by the course’s success — general manager Sam Morshead.

Perth racecourse — recently voted the best small course in Scotland — has been highly praised in the Scottish Parliament.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser highlighted the importance of Perth races to the local economy during a debate on the future of the racing industry.

“The recent successes of Perth racecourse is something the city of Perth and the whole of Scotland can be proud of,” the MSP said.

“Its annual turnover has climbed from £100,000 to £1m in the past 10 years, while a focus on attracting sponsors and providing high levels of prize money has seen Perth climb to 14th place in the British Horseracing Board Merit Table.

“The racecourse plays an important role in the civic and economic life of Perth and the surrounding area,” Mr Fraser continued. “With average crowds of 3000 a day — the highest of any Scottish racecourse — it is a popular local visitor attraction.

“The Perth Gold Cup Day in June is Scotland’s biggest family race day, attracting over 10,000 people.

“In light of its recent successes, the racecourse was recently awarded two new race days, July 2 and 3 — coinciding with the Game Conservancy Scottish fair — a massive boost for the local economy and one which I warmly welcome.

“The racecourse has also been successful in reaching out to the business community.

“It has also invested heavily in staff and training, providing new jobs for the area.

“I will give my full support to all efforts to ensure the future of horse racing in Scotland is secure.”
