Student rooms broken into
Detectives were today trying to establish what was taken when more than a dozen student rooms at a university hall of residence in Dundee were broken into, writes Steven Bell.
University of Dundee staff discovered shortly after 11 pm yesterday that doors on the first and second floors of a block at Belmont Halls had been forced.

However, it’s understood the break-in could have taken place any time after 9 pm, and investigating officers are appealing for information.

The extent of the haul from the Balfour Street building, on the university’s city centre campus, is not yet clear.

A university spokesperson said, “Residences were forcibly entered yesterday evening, and we are in the process of contacting all the students concerned.

“Janitors are on patrol across the campus every night, and we are constantly reviewing campus security.”

A Tayside Police spokesman confirmed that the break-in had been reported to them by a member of staff, and inquiries are ongoing to establish “what, if anything, has been stolen”.

He added, “We would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area around the time of the break-in to contact us on Dundee 223200 or speak to any officer.”
