| Moves to refurbish and improve the Broughty Ferry post office were welcomed today by ward councillor Charlie Webster.
He said he was “encouraged by the steps being taken to provide additional and better services and facilities on the Brook Street premises”.
“This is especially important because of the increased demand that will follow the closure of the West Ferry post office.”
The West Ferry branch is one of hundreds of urban post offices being axed across the UK as part of a rationalisation programme. It closes its doors at the end of this month.
When the decision was announced, residents voiced concern about whether Broughty Ferry post office, which is half-a-mile away, would be able to cope with the extra custom. Councillor Webster said he had been in touch with the owner and had received details of the “extensive refurbishment” that is under way.
This includes providing extra floor space, an extra serving booth at the counter, a proper queuing system, writing plinths and a wheelchair-friendly environment.
Staffing will also increase.
Post Office management have previously said efforts would be made to ensure the Ballindean Road and Craigiebank branches would also be able to cope with any extra business as a result of the West Ferry closure.
However, Broughty Ferry is by far the nearest alternative and it is expected to get the bulk of the diverted customers, especially the many elderly people living in the area who may find it difficult to get to other offices.
The on-going closure programme will probably see Dundee lose another two branches, at Victoria Road and Hilltown.
Comments made during a consultation exercise are being considered by the Post Office and a final announcement is expected soon. |
