| A group of Norwegian student teachers and teachers visited St John’s High School in Dundee today from the University of Newcastle, where they are studying English.
The Scandinavians are the third such group to visit St John’s — part of an annual visit set up to introduce teachers to different methods of teaching.
School head teacher George Haggarty said, “For a lot of the teachers, this is their first visit to Scotland. And they readily admit things are different this side of the border.”
He said the teachers had a whirlwind tour of the school, getting a broad overview of the set-up, and were also be introduced to the functioning of the school’s guidance system. Most of the visitors are primary teachers and a number are from rural parts of Norway. For some of them, this is a first taste of life in an inner-city school.
Elin Langaas, one of the more experienced teachers within the group, said she and the rest of the party have thoroughly enjoyed their time at St John’s and in Scotland. “I think it has been very useful and it has been a very good education for us,’’ she said. “We have been made very welcome in Dundee. The school system here is very interesting. We are going through changes in Norway and we talk about the Scottish system a lot.” |
