Good report for Dundee primary school
Dundee’s Hillside Primary School has improved significantly, and now provides a “positive and attractive learning environment”, an inspection report, published today, reveals.

The school, which was examined in detail by Government inspectors in June, achieved either very good, good or fair ratings for all aspects and had no unsatisfactory points.

This was reflected in the response from parents who were said to be “very positive” about the school.

The report says the school provided a “very friendly, welcoming and caring environment” with standards of behaviour from pupils described as “very high”.

All staff were fully committed to the pupils and the school, but there were some “important weaknesses in teamwork” and in the way in which attainment was promoted in classes. The report also noted that not all teachers consistently set sufficiently high expectations for pupil attainment.

Attainment in English and maths was “fair”, while it was “good” in religious and moral education.

Learning and teaching were said to have a number of strengths and most aspects were good although there were some weaknesses in the extent to which pupils’ needs were met.

The report noted that the head teacher had been responsible for moving the school forward in a number of ways, although she “had not been successful in ensuring all staff shared her vision and felt part of the team”.

It added, “The school had moved forward significantly in the recent past and this was reflected in some improvement in pupil attainment.

“There was now a need to ensure that all staff worked together to meet pupils’ needs and improve attainment further.”
