Letters - 23 October 2003
Family could have been killed
I WAS driving up Rankine Street in Dundee on October 16 at about 1 pm.
As I neared the top, a young male idiot in a silver car came flying down on two wheels doing about 80mph heading straight for us.

Fortunately I had the presence of mind to swing my car practically on to the pavement and he missed by about an inch.

He then skidded and turned round in a circle in the middle of the road. We could smell burning rubber. I jumped out to go over but he took off again.

If that maniac wasn’t on drugs, drink or in a stolen car he was just plain mad.

I’m a careful woman driver and used to enjoy motoring, but not any more. You now need eyes in the back of your head.

Three of my family could very easily have been killed. — Keep Death Off The Roads.

Daredevil bus
CAMPAIGNERS ARE urging car owners to take the bus to work. When my car was in the garage for repairs I had to take the Fintry bus to work in Dundee and what an experience.

I would have to spend a lot more money for 18 minutes on one of the daredevil rides at the carnival (18 minutes is what a driver tells me he is allowed from Albert Square to the Whitfield shops).

Only I didn’t want to go to the carnival. I wanted a pleasant and safe journey to and from my work.

In future, if my car breaks down, I will hire a car rather than worry all day whether I will have a safe or pleasant journey. — Ex-Bus Passenger.

[A spokesperson for Dundee Travel agreed that 18 minutes is the allotted time given to drivers for the journey.

The spokesperson said the company would be very happy to investigate any alleged incident.

Specifics, such as the date and time, would have to be provided.

Complaints can be lodged by calling 01382 201121, or by writing to Phil Smith, Dundee Travel, 44-48 East Dock Street, Dundee.]

Reply no different
THE SNP group on Dundee City Council has made a good fist of their opposition role so far, quick to criticise the coalition yet slow to share with us their view on the way ahead.

So the appearance of letter writer Fintryman’s challenge to Councillors FitzPatrick and Dawson concerning graffiti offered us the opportunity of seeing the Nationalists squirm in the hot seat for a change.

To be fair to Councillor Dawson he did admit there was no such thing as a quick fix.

But it was also interesting to note that his reply was no different to what we would expect to hear from any member of the coalition.

This appears at odds with the Nationalist boast that life in Dundee would better under the SNP. — Council Chamber Watcher.

Protests against Pakistan
I POINT out to letter writer J. N. that “peaceniks” have protested against Pakistan and other countries who have tested their nuclear weapons. They just do not get the same publicity.

As for his or her notion that Britain, US and Israel have a moral right to have nuclear weapons, I say no country has a moral right to possess such weapons.

The US having such weapons did not stop September 11.

J. N. also described Arab nations as anti-semitic. Arabs are also semites. They cannot be anti-themselves.

The only part of his letter that I agreed with was the bit about democracy, but how many democratically-elected governments has the CIA helped overthrow to replace with dictatorships?

You only have to look at what has been going on in Venezuela in the last two years — Peacenik Observer.

Not enough action
I READ about people in St Mary’s, Dundee, dumping rubbish to avoid paying the council to take it away.

This does not just apply to St Mary’s, but goes on all over the city.

Council and housing association tenants sign agreements stating they have to keep their building clean plus stairs and bins attended to weekly.

I think housing officers should go round their properties and see if they are kept up to standard.

Sending warning letters then ignoring the problem is not enough action. — Council Tenant.

All criminals
I READ with disbelief the letter stating that the naked rambler and streakers should not be treated as criminals.

Would he or she also condone someone walking naked across a playpark? Does he or she find the late night park flasher a comic?

To me, there is no difference. They are all criminals. It doesn’t matter if you flash one person or 60,000 in a stadium.

It makes you a criminal and a pervert and you should be treated as such and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register. — Put It Awa, Dundee.

Not free
WHEN is free travel on the buses for pensioners not free travel? Answer — when you are an Angus concession card-holder.

Travel Dundee states Angus card-holders can only have free transport to Ninewells Hospital. — Mrs W. Ward, East Grange Street, Monifieth.
