Vandalism at park
MUCH IS made in society about the need for escapism and the constant criticism aimed towards the youth who indulge in drugs, alcohol, etc.
I would like to remind people of an alternative form of escapism, it is natural, does not damage the environment, is educational, allows people to indulge in peaceful contemplation, is a place that stimulates imagination, and also allows people the opportunity to escape from the worst excesses of modern technology.

This place is Dundee’s Camperdown Park.

I strongly advise people to go soon as it would appear our so-called environmentally friendly council is determined to upset the ecology, distress the wildlife (those locked up in the zoo and those that are free) with heavy machinery, flashing lights and loud music. This is sometimes known as a carnival.

I strongly urge the people of Dundee and surrounding areas to oppose any further environmental vandalism being carried out at Camperdown and let this council know that enough is enough.

The idea of leisure being simply technological and mechanical is completely wrong. — James Hutchison, Dundee.

I READ a response from a Dundee City Council spokesman stating a survey had been taken regards the carnival at Camperdown Park.

Where did this take place? I was not surveyed, nor was anyone I know and I do not accept the “result”.

The prime movers behind this carnival and the prices had better not think for one minute this is going to go away. — Enough Is Enough.

I AGREE with No Carnivals points about Camperdown Park. As a Nan to three grandchildren, I and many, many mums, dads and grandparents are opposed to the carnival in this most splendid of our civic parks. — Nan.

Not asked about

The public garden ground at Elm Street — Logie Avenue in Dundee.

ON THE morning of September 26, I noticed a yellow digger removing the shrubs from the council-maintained corner of Elm Street and Logie Avenue.

I just thought to myself the lady who lives there must have requested this, and thought no more about it.

However, when I returned home about 11.30 pm imagine my horror when I saw that my corner had been ravaged by this yellow vandal.

On the Saturday morning, I checked with my upstairs neighbour and she had questioned the men doing the work, who told her they were removing the bushes because they were of the “prickly” variety and that these would be replaced by a “non-prickly” type.

I contacted Lochee housing office first thing on Monday morning.

It seems a supervisor thought the bushes were untidy. He must have missed my garden then.

Seems he has had the bright idea of removing these bushes and replacing them with rose bushes. Non-prickly rose bushes, I presume.

Apparently, he also said that these would be lower maintenance. Rose bushes will require more maintenance and he has removed the privacy and wind barrier that we enjoyed, without even a by your leave.

What is the point of having a residents’ association if city officials don’t even know it exists?

We’ve had enough of this command economy mentality — the “we’ll give you what we think you need”.

We wish to be consulted about things that affect our lives. — Ken MacDougall, Secretary, Logie Residents’ Association, Dundee.

Bus route wishes
I WISH people would stop saying those aged 60 or over in Dundee have a free bus pass.

Try boarding a bus before 9.30am and you will find you have to pay a fare, so how can it be a free pass?

Also, why can’t the 1A and 1B buses going to the town centre or back to the stance in Ardler take in the Stack Leisure Park at all times?

Then there’s the service on a Sunday. Some buses don’t run till after 10.15am and not everyone can have a long lie on the Sabbath. — C. A. Walker, Dundee.

I WISH they would put low-level buses on the 7 or 8 route to Dundee City Centre and Broughty Ferry. I am disabled and use a stick. I can’t get up the steps. One passenger came and had to help me on the bus.

They have those single-decker buses on the Downfield, Whitfield, Fintry, St Mary’s routes, so please give us a decent bus.

I know we have a free bus pass but these double-decker buses are no use for pensioners who are over 80 and older. — Disabled Pensioner.

IT’S TIME Travel Dundee sorted out an apparently confusing situation with the 4A and 4B buses.

Several times I have been left standing waiting on a 4B in Whitehall Street as drivers have gone via Union Street, which the 4A uses during the day. — George Aimer, Kinghorne Road, Dundee.

Waiting for a chance
I READ recently that Dundee Taxi Drivers’ Association said the cost of a black cab was too expensive for many of its members.

The DTDA represents a only a small number of people involved in the trade. There are 2400 badge holders in the city and the DTDA represents fewer than 70 of them.

Licence holders I have talked to said they would invest in a black cab if it meant stopping another 70 licences being handed out.

On top of that there is a waiting list with 500 names on it. Many of these people would be prepared to invest if they were given the opportunity. — Operator.
