New-look United to face Everton

Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson (centre) accepts a trophy on behalf of the club from the Federation of Dundee United Supporters’ Clubs. Presenting the trophy, which will be played for at a date still to be decided by the Tannadice club, are chairman of the FDUSC Mike Barile (right) and Jim Hendry of the Dundee Taxi Drivers’ Club, who donated the trophy.

Dundee United boss Ian McCall is eagerly awaiting tomorrow night’s clash with Everton at Tannadice (writes Graeme Finnan).
The game will give the vast majority of the Tangerines’ support the first opportunity to see McCall’s new-look side and, with no injury worries, there is every possibility of as many as seven new men being on show at Tannadice.

And, with Dave Moyes’ men having beaten Rangers at the weekend, McCall admits his side are in for a tough 90 minutes.

“This will be a really good test for us, especially after Everton’s win at Ibrox,” said Ian.

“Everyone is fit and we are all looking forward to the game.”

Striker Billy Dodds is likely to continue his build-up to the new season by playing some part in proceedings.

The former Rangers man has been troubled by an Achilles injury, but, after playing for 45 minutes against Airdrie United on Saturday, he is likely to be given a similar run against the Toffeemen and, all being well, could well be available for a starting place when Hibs visit Tannadice on August 9 for the SPL opener.

Meanwhile, although Everton will be minus teenage sensation Wayne Rooney, who was injured during Saturday’s clash with Rangers, they may still field several players who will be instantly recognisable to the home support.

Former Celtic man Alan Stubbs could line up in defence alongside ex-Hearts pair David Weir and Gary Naysmith, while Scottish internationalist Scott Gemmill may feature in midfield.

However, it’s Everton’s attack, where Duncan Ferguson could be set to make a return to the ground where he burst onto the scene as a raw teenager in the early 90s, that is likely to be of greatest interest to United followers.

Fans are reminded that season tickets are not valid for tomorrow night’s game. Admission prices are — adults £14/£12, concessions £10/8.
