Arbroath top of the league at porn site

By Martin Flynn, 9 January 2014 8.11am.

Historically, Arbroath is famous for Declarations, smoked fish and lop-sided football scores.

Now the town is on the map for another reason - saucy surfing on the internet.

The fishing port’s online community combined to spend more minutes per visit on a major pornography site than people anywhere else in Scotland.

Pornhub released a mass of data this week, which showed the habits of visitors to its pages. The results — sorted by area — showed the average amount of time spent on the site per visit, the average number of pages viewed per visit, and the most popular search terms.

The data revealed that Arbroath’s residents spent an average of 10 minutes, 12 seconds on the site, putting them comfortably above the Scottish average of 9 min 45 sec.

That was no mean feat, as the average Scottish session was longer than in the three other UK countries.

In Scotland, Arbroath topped the table after it was ranked No. 1 in terms of average visit length.

The Angus town ended up seventh in terms of the average number of pages viewed per visit, as Livingston led the way with 7.15. It also contributed 18,690 of the
111 million total visits to the site over the last 12 months.

Laura Lee is the media representative for the International Union of Sex Workers in Scotland and Ireland, and was aware of the new statistics. She said: “I think it’s quite twee that Arbroath came out on top. It’s not quite as closed a community as people would think, I suppose.”

The 35-year-old escort plans to visit Tayside this month and added: “When I go up to Dundee I’m really quite busy. The sex industry as a whole has moved forward in the last couple of years. People like myself speaking about it openly has gone a long way towards de-stigmatising it — that can only be a good thing. So, good for Arbroath.”

The East Dunbartonshire town of Kirkintilloch posted the lowest Scottish totals in both categories, with an average visit of 8 min 58 sec and 6.53 pages viewed.

Northern Ireland clocked a low of 9 min 35 sec, Wales was third with
9 min 38 sec and English site-surfers ran the Scots close with an average visit of 9 min 42 sec.
