Dundee United boss wants to add ex-Celtic striker

Dundee United have been working on a deal to bring in former Celtic striker Denny Johnstone on loan.

But the cash wanted by his current employers, Birmingham City, is proving a stumbling block.

The 21-year-old wants to join up at Tannadice for the whole of next season and is well known to Tangerines boss Ray McKinnon.

He saw him face then-charges Raith Rovers on four occasions during a successful loan spell with Morton last term.

His year at Cappielow saw the young Scot hit the back of the net 17 times in 43 appearances and a similar return next term would boost the attempt to get back to the Premiership at the first time of asking.

This is not the first time the former youth international has been on United’s radar.

Ex-boss Jackie McNamara wanted to sign him from Celtic’s youth system two years ago.

The move was aborted because United were already facing a transfer tribunal to determine compensation they’d have to pay to Rangers for the Charlie Telfer.

They ended up paying £200,000 for Telfer and had they signed Johnstone, could have been hit with a similar bill.

Interest is also being shown in a loan deal for Aberdeen’s Cammy Smith, though it’s not certain a deal for him will be done.

Even if one is, it could be another week or two before details are finalised.
